These are the Waitomo glow caves in New Zealand, and they’re named for the glowworms that inhabit them, Arachnocampa luminosa. The glowworms are endemic to New Zealand, and are around the size of an average mosquito. The walls of the caves are covered with a mushroom like fungi related to the genus Pleurotus. Albino cave ants and weta (giant crickets) also inhabit this cave system.

“Starting at Kalapana, Hawaii I walked for two hours right to the place on the coast where active lava flows were touching the ocean. I was overwhelmed about the scene: Hot air touched my face as I stood at the edge of the cliff, steam drifted away by the strong wind, thunders in my ears as the waves crushed on the melted stones and water fought with fire. I stood and watched the lava flows started to glow as it became darker. I wanted to express what happened there. Biologists would have you call this thing an Armadillo-Girdled Lizard, Cordylus cataphractus, but I won’t be fooled. This is clearly a baby dragon. They also have this adorable habit of biting their own tails for no discernible reason. Which is adorable until you remember what the ouroboros is, and inevitably conclude that these things are also dark magic.
Magical dragons. It all makes sense.
